Cooling Fan Replacement Guide
How to Find the Right Replacement Cooling Fan
If you are replacing a failed cooling fan and do not know the exact part number, use this guide to narrow down the correct replacement by model, dimensions, voltage, current, connector and application.
Step 1: Start with the Original Model Number
If the label is readable, search by the original brand and model number first. This is the fastest path for finding exact or compatible options.
Step 2: Check Fan Dimensions
Measure length x width x thickness in millimeters. Common examples include 40x40x20mm, 80x80x25mm and 120x120x38mm. Browse by size if you do not have the exact model:
- Mini Fans: 15-45mm
- Small Fans: 50-70mm
- Standard Fans: 75-92mm
- Large Fans: 95-150mm
- Industrial Fans: 159mm+
Step 3: Match Voltage and Current
Do not replace a 12V DC fan with 24V DC or 230V AC. Check the label carefully and then browse the matching electrical category:
Step 4: Confirm Connector and Wire Count
Connector mismatch is a common reason replacements fail. Check whether your original fan uses a 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire connector and whether PWM control is required.
Step 5: Decide Between Exact Match and Compatible Replacement
For maintenance repairs, an exact model may not always be necessary. In many cases, a compatible replacement can work if size, voltage, current and connector requirements are satisfied.
