Cooling Fan Connector Guide: 2-Wire, 3-Wire, 4-Wire and PWM for Replacement Matching
- 27 Jun, 2026
Wire count and connector shape are two separate checks. Count the wires entering the fan and the positions in the plug, then verify what each connection does using documentation for the exact model and equipment. Three wires do not prove a tachometer output, and four wires do not prove a particular PWM control interface.
Three photographed examples
Two leads with a connector in view

The visible plug helps compare the housing and lead arrangement. Its colour does not establish connector series, contact pitch or polarity. Confirm the mating connector and pin assignment from the original assembly or exact-model documentation.
Three leads with the termination outside the photo

This photo supports “3-wire”, but does not support “3-pin connector”. The third wire's function also needs verification. Request a full-harness photo and the exact-model connection information before choosing a replacement.
Four leads with a four-position plug and shroud

These observations do not establish a PWM pin, control frequency, tachometer output or compatibility with a PC motherboard header. The complete suffix, connector keying, pin order and equipment interface still need to match. The shroud and cable exit also affect fit.
What a photo can and cannot establish
| Check | Visible evidence | Still requires confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Wire count | Count the separately visible leads in a clear harness photo. | Function of each lead; hidden splices or connections. |
| Connector | Count positions; compare the contact face, latch and cable entry. | Connector family, contact pitch and mating part. |
| Signal functions | A photograph may show labels, but colours alone do not identify signals. | Polarity, tachometer or alarm function, PWM input and electrical limits for the exact version. |
| Mechanical fit | Compare housing, shroud, mounting features and cable exit. | Measured dimensions, hole spacing, lead length and installation clearance. |
Five checks before ordering
- Record the full model and suffix, supply type and voltage from the original label.
- Photograph the whole harness without hiding the wire ends.
- Take a straight-on contact-face photo and a cable-entry photo of the plug. Note the latch orientation.
- Obtain a pinout or wiring document that corresponds to the exact fan and equipment. If unavailable, mark the signal functions as unconfirmed.
- Compare the frame, mounting points, shroud and cable length as well as the connection.
A physically matching plug is not enough to confirm an electrical replacement. If the connection information is missing, request clarification before connecting the replacement to the equipment.
Send your label and connector photos through Photo Support. Include the equipment model and the exact information you still need confirmed.
For the rest of the fit checks, use the fan identification checklist. Browse DC brushless and axial fans, 12V fans or 24V fans after verifying the original rating.
Evidence and scope
The comparisons above use the existing photographs on the three linked product pages. They describe visible labels, leads, plugs and housings; they are not pinout diagrams. No universal wire-colour convention or PWM compatibility is asserted for these photographed assemblies.
