Cooling Fan Replacement Guide
How to Choose the Right Replacement Cooling Fan
Use this guide when replacing an axial fan, blower, server fan, power-supply fan, inverter fan, cabinet fan, or other industrial equipment cooling fan. The safest match starts with the complete manufacturer model number and suffix, then confirms dimensions, voltage, current or power, airflow requirements, wire functions, and connector.
1. Match the Complete Model Number and Suffix
Search the full brand and model printed on the original label. Do not drop letters or suffixes: related models can use different current, speed, airflow, alarm, tachometer, PWM, waterproofing, bearing, or connector configurations.
2. Measure Frame Size, Thickness, and Mounting
Measure length x height x thickness in millimeters and confirm the mounting-hole pattern. A 120mm fan can be 25mm, 32mm, 38mm, or another thickness, so width alone is not enough.
- Mini Fans: 15-45mm
- Small Fans: 50-70mm
- Standard Fans: 75-92mm
- Large Fans: 95-150mm
- Industrial Fans: 159mm+
3. Confirm Voltage Before Current
AC and DC fans are not interchangeable, and the rated voltage must match the equipment. Current or power helps identify the correct performance class, but a similar current value alone does not prove compatibility.
- 12V DC Cooling Fans
- 24V DC Cooling Fans
- 48V DC Cooling Fans
- 115V AC Cooling Fans
- 230V AC Cooling Fans
4. Check RPM, Airflow, Static Pressure, and Air Direction
A same-size fan can provide very different cooling performance. Compare RPM, airflow CFM, static pressure, noise, and airflow direction where reliable exact-model data is available. High-static-pressure fans are often required in servers, heatsinks, filters, and dense equipment.
5. Verify Wire Count, Connector, and Signal Functions
Two wires commonly provide power, while additional wires can carry tachometer, alarm, PWM, or control signals. Wire colors and pin order are not universal. Match the connector body, pin count, keying, wire order, and documented function before connecting a replacement.
Read the detailed 2-wire, 3-wire, 4-wire and PWM connector guide.
6. Exact Replacement or Compatible Alternative?
Choose the exact model whenever suffix-dependent functions are required. Consider a compatible alternative only after confirming every critical electrical, mechanical, airflow, signal, and connector requirement. Do not select a replacement from dimensions or voltage alone.
